Although we chatted only briefly at recent 92 Squadron reunions Derek, I particularly remember you as one of the larger than life characters on the Squadron when I spent a couple of weeks with you at Gutersloh in 1975. Thank you for making such a junior RAF "sprog" feel so welcome.

Thank you Derek for many years of supporting our school so whole-heartedly as a governor and Chair of Governors. You were a hugely committed advocate and ally of the school and staunch in the face of many challenges over the years. We'll always remember your contribution at Gossops Green Primary; bless you.

Derek, it was a privilege to know you. I have many happy memories of our time together at Gutersloh, including a flight with you in a "T-Bird". You were, quite simply, a lovely man. If we ever manage to hold another 92(F) Squadron reunion, you will certainly be saluted by all your friends.

I will miss you Bro! in so many ways.
For:
Teaching me good table manners when you came home from Cranwell to our asbestos filled prefab.
I will always remember you frowning at me from the other end of the table when I didn't eat my peas from the back of my fork, even though I was only 3.
The model toy cars you brought home.
Taking me for a ride in the rubber carpeted load area of your grey mini van around South Norwood.
Bringing your friends home and letting me play with them. Pete, Brian and Liz.
Seeing you dressed up in your flying suit and helmet.
Being an inspiration to do well at School, even though I only went to a comprehensive.
Encouraging me with my failed application to join the General Duties branch of the RAF. It was Pilot or join the BBC.
Driving from Germany to be with Dais and me when Dad died.
Taking me out for driving lessons in the Audi (100GL 1972). I was more frightened of failing you than any examiner, hence passing first time.

Selling me that Audi in 1978 and the exhaust falling off within a week...
Educating me in the delights of alcohol and telling me how to "make a call on the white telephone".
Telling Dais and me to book the Harwich to Bremerhaven ferry instead of flying. The smorgasbord was not so appetising once we left harbour.
Recommending Java Pilsner, Harvey Wallbangers, and Gin and Its.
Waiting until after midnight for me to ask Rachel to marry me whilst in Munich. It almost slipped my mind as we were having such a good time.
All your help and advice when Dais died, sorry the bequeathed TV lasted only a month (payback for the Audi exhaust?).
Giving me an idea of what my hair will look like in 17 years..
Enough,
I hope you knew how much I looked up to you, even though you were shorter.
To me you will always be Del.
