Rod was a lovely guy. I have the very best memories of him. He introduced me to several good things in life, like A E Housman. We should have met up more often, but the life of work always seemed to get in the way until it was too late.

A great friend while we were at BNC together and someone whose intelligence and decency had a strong influence on me. Although I left the UK 50 years ago and seldom returned for any length of time, it was still a great joy to meet the same Rod, again, a couple of years ago. I will remember him warmly: of those who knew him, who could forget him?
