RNLI
Learn more about us
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales.
Volunteers are the heart of the RNLI. We rely on more than 40,000 volunteers - on lifeboats, at stations, on beaches, and in fundraising.
Some crew members and most lifeguards are full time. They work with other staff to ensure comprehensive safety coverage around our islands. The RNLI is an independent charity with a board of volunteer trustees.

In memory of my lovely godmother. Many happy memories especially from my childhood. I especially remember Auntie Sheila taking me to Stockport to get my student nurse uniforms just before I went to uni! And lots of nice cake when we visited!

With thanks for all Sheila's kindness in person and through letters and cards over the decades since, to Carolyn and Andrew, her piano pupils about 35 years ago, to my late wife, Ros, and to me. Sheila was a living lesson to us all.

Sheila was a memorable godmother. I have particular memories of a snowy weekend stay when she introduced me, as a child, to rhubarb and ginger jam, tenpin bowling, Fred Basset cartoons and church socials (an eclectic mix)! She will be missed by all of us.

Sheila, thank you for providing me with a "home from home" as a student, particularly the second time when you had really finished with all that, and also caring for our son for the few months he was in Manchester training. I have some cherished memories of our subsequent visits at Christmas and stopping off on our way to Lancashire. You were always welcoming with a drink and biscuit / cake - however short the notice. God Bless you.
