Alan Fone
Passed away peacefully on 17 February 2026.
As education was both a vocation and a passion for Dad throughout his life, we think he would approve.

National Literacy Trust
Learn more about us
One person in six in the UK lives with poor literacy. This holds them back at every stage of their life. As a child they won't be able to succeed at school, as a young adult they will be locked out of the job market, and on becoming a parent they won't be able to support their child's learning.
The National Literacy Trust is a national charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK.
We work to improve the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the UK's most disadvantaged communities, where up to 40 per cent of people have literacy problems. Our research and analysis make us the leading authority on literacy and drive our interventions. Because low literacy is intergenerational, we focus our work on families, young people and children.

In memory of Alan and on behalf of his long time friend, Karl, I was sad to hear of his death as it brings to an end an almost 62-year association. Alan and Karl were kindred spirits who shared a passion for drama and dramatics and both had a quirky sense of humour. Alan was always the frontman with a laugh that filled a room but he was also a fiercely loyal and kind man. He will leave an empty space but he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
