The Royal Society of Musicians is Britain's oldest music charity and its aims remain as relevant today as they were in the earliest years - to provide immediate financial assistance to musicians unable to work due to accident, illness or old age. Being a charity run by musicians for musicians, the Society is uniquely placed to fully understand the challenges faced within the profession. This was a Charity that Nigel supported all his working life.

Nigel and I played together in our school band, he was beyond talented and it was wonderful to see him years later when he turned up to perform in concerts with Wokingham Choral Society, last one being the Verdi Req. Such a gentle man, may he rest in peace.

All those years staring at each other across a crowded orchestra. I was always in awe of his knowledge and ability to play anything he set his mind to. He was sometimes kind, sometimes cantakerous, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, but always brilliant. The stories are legendary (and to be found on Twitter where I've placed a couple) but my abiding memory is of him professionally, when he played an original Tambour Provencal in L'Arlesienne Suite slung across his shoulders. Utterly brilliant.
